Senior Advisor and Strategist, Delano Seiveright, says the organisers of the conference assessed the situation in Montego Bay yesterday.

The tourism ministry says Wednesday’s heavy rains in Montego Bay, St James, will not affect Jamaica’s hosting of the upcoming Global Tourism Conference slated for the Montego Bay Convention Centre.

The rain caused businesses and schools in Montego Bay to close yesterday after water inundated the town, leaving damage, mud and debris across the city.

However, Delano Seiveright senior advisor and strategist to to the Tourism Minister, says the organisers of the conference assessed the situation in Montego Bay yesterday.

He says the Convention Centre, Hotels, Airport, tour areas and all other related activities are far away from the affected areas.

He says there is no impact and preparations are proceeding normally.

The three-day United Nations World Tourism Organisation Conference is set to start on Monday.

The tourism ministry says President and Chief Executive Officer of Carnival Corporation, Arnold Donald, and President and Chief Operating Officer of Royal Caribbean Cruises Limited, are expected to attend the conference.

Carnival Corporation is the world’s largest cruise company with a fleet of 102 ships visiting more than 700 ports around the world, while Royal Caribbean Cruises Limited through its brands operate a combined total of 48 ships with an additional thirteen on order.
