Texas Tech falls in series opener to Oklahoma, 8-0
LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - The Texas Tech Baseball program saw its eight-game home Big 12 winning streak snapped, falling to No. 22 Oklahoma, 8-0 Friday night at Rip Griffin Park at Dan Law Field.
It marked the first time that Texas Tech (30-18, 12-13 Big 12) was shutout this season and the first time Tech was shutout for the first time since Game 7 of the Gainesville regional.
The shutout at home is the first since the 2021 Super Regionals (Jun. 12) against Stanford. After the teams traded zeros in the first, Oklahoma (27-17, 16-6 Big 12) used a two-run double from Scott Mudler to take a 2-0 lead.
Looking to answer, the Red Raiders mounted their best scoring chance in the bottom of the second when Drew Woodcox walked to lead off the inning and Tracer Lopez singled. With the tying runs on base, Tech struck out.
The game remained 2-0 until the fifth when OU used a wind-aided lead-off double from Mudler to jumpstart a four-run inning that was prolonged by three costly Red Raider errors.
Free pitched six innings and allowed eight hits, seven runs and struck out two. Only four of the seven runs were earned.
OU used singular runs in the sixth and seventh to close out the 8-0 win.
In the setback the Red Raiders got two strong innings from Cole Kaase and a scoreless inning from Carson Baugh, while Gavin Kash went 2-for-4 with his 16th double of the year.
UP NEXT:The Red Raiders will look to even the weekend series on Saturday afternoon. First pitch for the middle game of the weekend series has been moved up an hour due to inclement weather, meaning first pitch is now set for 1 p.m.
